Lesson Plan: Teaching the Past Progressive (TPACK Model)

Lesson Objectives

Lesson Procedure
1. Warm-Up (5 minutes)

Activity:

Display an image on Google Slides of a busy scene (e.g., a park or street).
Ask students: "What were people doing in this scene?" Elicit responses using verbs such as walking, talking, running.

Purpose:

Activate prior knowledge and introduce the concept of actions in progress in the past.

2. Presentation (10 minutes)
Content:

Structure: Present the formula for the Past Progressive using Google Slides:

Subject + was/were + verb(-ing)
Examples: "She was reading a book." "They were playing soccer."
Usage: Explain with examples:

Actions in progress at a specific time in the past (e.g., "At 8 PM, I was cooking dinner.")
Actions interrupted by another action (e.g., "I was watching TV when the phone rang.")
Visual Aid:

Play a short video clip of a park scene, pausing to highlight what people were doing and noting interruptions (e.g., "She was jogging when it started to rain.").

3. Guided Practice (10 minutes)
Activity:

Distribute printed worksheets or use a collaborative Google Doc.
Students complete sentences using the Past Progressive:

Example: "While I ___ (read), my cat ___ (jump) onto the table."
Pair students to compare answers.
Teacher Role:

Monitor students’ work and provide feedback.

4. Application (10 minutes)
Activity:

Conduct a Kahoot quiz with 5-7 questions on Past Progressive usage.

Example Question: "Choose the correct sentence: (a) She was eat pizza. (b) She was eating pizza."
Encourage participation and discuss correct answers as a group.
Purpose:

Reinforce learning and make it engaging through gamified assessment.

5. Wrap-Up (5 minutes)
Reflection Activity:

Show an image or describe a scenario. Ask students to write one sentence using the Past Progressive and one sentence using the Simple Past.
Share examples aloud.

Homework:

Ask students to write a short paragraph about what they were doing yesterday at a specific time and include at least two sentences using the Past Progressive.
